San Juan Stormwater
Hard surfaces such as roads, roofs, and sidewalks prevent stormwater in urban areas from entering the soil. This water runoff can accumulate pollutants along its way to rivers, lakes, and wetlands. Cities and towns are designed to move storm water toward waterways, so extra care must be taken to implement water catchment systems that mimic the natural hydrology of the local area. These systems help keep water in place so it can saturate the soil and support native habitat.
In 2019, a partnership of regional environmental agencies, including the SJWG, conducted volunteer projects to address water drainage issues along main roads in Farmington, Aztec, and Bloomfield. The projects also educated the local community on low-impact development, helping residents consider the long-term consequences of polluted stormwater runoff.
